How to Make a Child Want to Learn?

Learning as a preschooler has something to do both by fear and motivation. Fear can be caused by separation anxiety. Motivation, on the other hand, is the recovery from such.

At Hilltop Children’s Center, a reliable provider of child care near Liberty Hill, TX, our preschool teachers do a big part in keeping the children maintain their motivation in learning and as much as possible, eliminate fear. However, this does not mean that only the educators are responsible for making learners active in schooling. Parents perform a large role also on causing them to love school. Here are some tips on how everyone can help foster the motivation of the kid to thrive to learn:

  • Initiative
Sometimes people will come to the extent on becoming unmotivated on doing their job. No one can blame them. Being always controlled and told what to do can actually make a person feel forced to do a thing. Imagine that to your child.

The idea is not about giving complete freedom to the kids on deciding what they want to do. This means to lessen the possibility of opposition. And it is by taking initiative. For example, provide them with choices between two equal and acceptable alternatives. Color pens or crayons? Dancing or singing? To draw or to write? This makes them notice that they can actually have some choices and control over on their learning.

  • Relationship
Obviously, this primarily refers to the parents and family. Children love to do something for people they care for. That is the foundation of their motivation. As much as possible, recognize their feelings. They may want to please you to the point that they will do their best to make you proud of them.

However, avoid praising them too much. It might give them false hopes. Instead, make your warmth and encouragement more motivating and genuine.

  • Giving of rewards
The thought is practically unquestionable. Giving something as a reward for a job done is what you can do to your child. But be careful with the system. If done always, it can actually make the kid get used to it to the extent that it will make him or her bored. Worse is if he or she does something, then a return is anticipated each time. Otherwise, the task is not completed because the condition was not granted.

Rewards are external motivation. They can help. However, let us instill to the children that in doing a task, it is important that the reason for doing so comes from what is most valued. Better if it is for himself or herself so that learning is lasting.

  • Feeling competent
To feel encouragement and warmth while doing a task is actually better than being given praises after it has done. Studies show that complimenting children for their effort instead of their innate abilities causes them to take any challenges on their own volition.

It encourages them to think for strategies. For example, your child dislikes dancing. But as he or she moves, you can actually address the gaps and say words that can cheer him or her up. Instead of saying “you are wrong,” try telling your kid his or her flaws, strengths and improvements.

  • Intrinsic motivation
Who the child is and what he or she values should be the primary source of motivation. That is what youngsters have to build as much as possible at an early age. Witnessing people nowadays, we always depend on what society thinks for motivation and goals. In the end, we feel dissatisfied and regret.
  • Fun and enjoyment
This is the most important factor to consider in nurturing the love for the learning of children. Motivation is even so easy once excitement and interest come in along the way.

Children will ride a bike for as long as they want because they enjoy it. They will draw and color because they find fun in doing it.

Happiness is what kids anticipate of. They will do and learn a certain thing because they are emotionally attached to it. What is good about this idea is that it builds up internal motivation. When internal motivation is being established, long-term learning can possibly happen.

Celebrate every hard work and stumbling pace of the youngsters as they learn and develop their strengths. In the long run, they can build up and strengthen their passion and motivation to learn.
