It’s common for kids to feel a mix of emotions when they encounter new experiences. When faced with something new, even if it’s a good thing, it can be nerve-racking.
When confronted with something unfamiliar or difficult, children tend to shy away from it. However, kids need to try new things that are safe and appropriate for their age if you want them to develop.
As a trusted child development center in Liberty Hill, Texas, here are some advice to help your child:
- Spend as much quality time with them.
While they spend a good amount of time with a child care provider, nothing beats quality time with parents. Doing this daily helps to maintain a strong bond with your child. It allows them to open up to you naturally.
- Ask about their thoughts.
Help them understand what they are feeling at the moment. They may have something to share or not but it helps when they know that you care.
- Validate their feelings.
Keep from saying things like, “There’s nothing to worry about.” It can make kids think they shouldn’t feel the way they do. Rather, listen calmly and accept their feelings.
- Soothe and comfort your child.
It may be more helpful to offer comfort and empathy. Remind them that you are there to support them. Teach them to relax their mind and body with calm breathing.
