How to Teach your Child to Value Honesty

small girl eating

Honesty is an extremely important value one should keep for himself or herself. It does not do only good for the individual but also in the society. If somebody is honest with his or her mistake, everybody could join hands in solving the problem. Once a person observes the value, his or her loved ones will not find it hard accepting their significant other. When somebody is honest, everybody is confident that they are in safe hands.

So, it is important to teach children the value of honesty. But wait, are children not the embodiment of honesty? If you think about it, yes they are. Children are innocent and because of their innocence, they are more likely to tell the truth than their adult counterpart.

In this sense, we are not likely teaching children how to be honest but how they can bring that value until the day they grow. In this blog, Hilltop Children’s Center is going to list things you can do to teach your child how to value honesty.

  • Let them grow connected with you
Children lie simply because they cannot tell you the truth. And why is it that they cannot tell you the truth? It is because they do not trust you. Trust is the first value a child learns to treasure. Once he or she feels secured, they will eventually trust you to not only care for them but also trust you with the truth of things.
  • Be a good role model
Albert Bandura stresses out the way children imitate their environment. This is the first step to learning. These little ones still do not know the concept of right and wrong. So, what better way to teach them how to remain honest than by showing them you are honest in the first place?
  • Reassure them that the truth is always better
Children want to impress their parents in a certain way. That is why they get into all sorts of adventures and even peculiar situations just to call their parent’s attention. This also goes for telling the truth. Sometimes, kids lie in order to make a good image to their parents. For that reason, you need to assure them that you would prefer that they are honest rather than be good at something through cheating.
  • Never label a child who lies
Once you do, the child will immediately define themselves as such. To them, being labeled as something bad is even better than not being labeled at all. And when you do, he or she will carry it through the rest of his or her life.
  • Do not get upset
Because children do not want mommy or daddy to be angry at them, they lie instantaneously. So who is now teaching them to not disclose the truth? You are. We know you might be upset after your child has broken your favorite vase but at least you did not break his or her trust, right?
  • Confront the lies
Never let a child get away with lying. When they lie and you are certain that they did, you have to correct them the right way right away. Tell them again how much you value honesty and that you would appreciate it more if honesty is being observed.
  • Teach your child that honesty can also hurt people
It is good to be honest but there are times that honesty can crush someone’s heart. So, instead of blurting out painful truths, you can advise them to stay silent about the whole thing.
  • Put yourself in the shoes of your child
Children make pretend stories so they could feel better. And if you want to uncover the truth, it is ideal for you to get behind the eyes of your child. Investigate until you know what has happened and when you do, help your child have a platform to come clean.

Here in Hilltop Children’s Center, a child care near Liberty Hill, TX, we teach not only the basic skills and knowledge but also values.

How about you? How do you value a child’s honesty and how do you encourage them to tell the truth? Leave your answers in the comment section below.
